Go biking on Coronado island!

Welcome to Coronado Island!!
This is one of my very favorite things to do when out of town guests come to visit. You can rent beach cruisers at a few places in town. Coronado Island is perfect for biking since it is fairly flat and there are so many great sights to see. I feel like I just stepped out of a Normal Rockwell painting when I am in Coronado.

There are so many sights to see. You can enjoy lunch or just sight seeing at the stunning Hotel Del Coronado or you can bring a picnic and enjoy lunch on the beach. There are many great cafes for dining. There are many historic homes on Coronado island to peddle past on your bike or you can opt to ride along on the bay or beach on the board walk.

You can rent bikes at Hollands as well as a few other places in town

Read a book at the beach!

One of my favorite things to do is head down to the beach with a sun hat, a good book and a cool drink.

I am currently reading a great book called "Into the Silence" The great war, Mallory and the conquest of Everest. It is by Wade Davis. It is a fascinating read about World War One and the British adventurers who survived the trenches to then risk their lives climbing Mount Everest.

Its a fairly dense read full of history and the mapping of the Himalayan Frontier. For every mountaineer who made it to the top of even on the mountain many lost their lives fighting in the war.

The beach is the perfect place to rest. read and fill your mind with far away places. Enjoy!

Go for a Trail Run

There are many hidden trails in and around Encinitas. Here are a few of my favorites.

The San Elijo Lagoon has a great trail run that starts on Manchester avenue across the street and slightly West of the Encinitas Mira Costa College campus. Be aware you can park in the lot on weekends without a permit but you may get ticketed if you park on Campus without a permit on weekdays. The best spot to park seems to be at the gas station slightly East of the I-5 on the street. There is a great 3 mile loop if you take the trail heading East towards Encinitas. If you want a longer run its about 3.5 to 4 miles to the beach and back if you head West. You can loop the 2 sections together for a 6 to 8 mile run and there are some pretty steep hills to add if you need a hill work out.

Here is a link to the nature conservancy that includes a map of the trails

Other awesome runs in the area are the Quail Gardens trail runs, Torrey Pines,  Los Penasquitos and Lake Hodges. There are many great trail runs in and around San Diego! We are very lucky! I am no expert but here are a few running tips that have helped keep me motivated.

1. Get some running partners. They help motivate you to get out of bed on cold mornings. I have some amazing running partners who inspire me in so many ways!

2. Get good shoes. I love the store "Movin Shoes" in Encinitas because they help fit the best shoes for your gait and foot.

3. Read the amazing book called "Born to Run" by Christopher Mcdougall, It is one of the most interesting books I have read. It is about life not just running. I had a hard time putting it down.

4. Join a runners group. Trail running meet up group

5. Stick to a training plan. I like good old fashioned Hal Higdon

6. Sign up for a Run: this helps to motivate me to keep running. You can start small with a 5K or 10K. Here are a few websites with local trail races.

7. Get out there and have fun!!!http: Here are some upcoming races in and around Encinitas.

More Local Stories
Al's Barbershop: How a gambling man won a barbershop and turned it into an Encinitas institution. Read about it here and then come to the Museum to see the actual artifacts from that era.
Prohibition in North County: Ever wonder how Moonlight Beach got its name? Some say it had something to do with rum-runners during Prohibition. Whether true or not, our local beaches served as a colorful backdrop to tough times during the depression.
Lagoon History: An airfield in the San Dieguito River Valley? For blimps? Strange, yet true!

#33 Sip on a yummy smoothie from the new Whole Food's store in Encinitas

One of my favorite things to do is to ride my bike from my house to the new Whole Foods on the 101 in downtown Encinitas. They have delicious green smoothies full of kale and berries (sounds gross but tastes incredible).

Just walking down the isles can be a real treat. The produce is mostly organic and locally grown and they have all sorts of sustainable, creative foods to fill your belly.

There is a great seating area where one can enjoy the coastal breezes and a nice lunch!
